Keystone Project: UDL Book Builder

Keystone Project- UDL Book
Dr. Hsu

My UDL book is on the topic of the Civil Rights Movement, specifically the story of Rosa Parks. I chose this topic because the classroom is a diverse place. There is a lot of room for discriminatory thoughts or encounters. Learning about the civil rights movement helps students know the rights of every person and that every person is equal no matter where they come from. This is a vital concept for students of all ages, it’s never too early to start. Students like to learn about heroes and heroines so they will like learning about the people of the movement. They will connect with the ideas and values and apply it to their own lives. In addition, the students today are exposed to so much violence. They watch it, read about it, hear about it all the time! The Civil Rights Movement proves that the most valuable and influential changes came as a result of peace.

The ELA teachers I have been working with were eager about this project. They felt the need for more non-fiction books that are not dry and unmotivating for students to read. It’s difficult to find interesting non-fiction texts but it’s imperative for students to read and have access to them. Thus, this project was taken on and the teachers suggested topics and ideas that would be interesting and beneficial for the students to learn. ELA teachers can implement UDL book builder in a few ways. Firstly, they can use it as a means to fill in gaps in their resources. As in this case, they can use it to make dry texts more interesting for students. Secondly, students themselves can create books in groups or independently as a summative review of a topic, as a creative writing project or even a journal!

Other teachers can use the book I created as a model for their students on how to use UDL book builder. Alternatively, they can use it as a supplement for a Civil Rights Movement Unit. In all, this project has led me to learn so many new things, and it can help many teachers and students all over.

  2. Excellent work! I love how you utilized the characters to tell the story and explain new vocabulary for the students. Suggestion: Maybe add credits to where you got the images from. Fantastic!!! :D
